ABSTRACT:
This document describes how to take advantage of currently available best practices for energy consumption in data centers and the steps that can be taken in the future to improve data center energy efficiency. This document will describe a few of the existing best practices.

Reducing energy consumption falls into four categories:

  • A facility component (typically, the chiller, fan, pump, mechanical refrigeration, and allied software)
  • The IT opportunity
  • The steps that organizations can take today
  • The steps that organizations can take in the future

Pitt Turner is a Principal of ComputerSite Engineering and has personally guided billions of dollars in client site-infrastructure investments. Prior to his consulting work, Turner was the Senior Project Manager for Pacific Bell’s Fairfield Data Center. He was responsible for the concept development, design, construction, and start-up for a 200,000 square-foot facility. Turner is a Distinguished Fellow and Senior Certification Authority for the Uptime Institute and a faculty member for the Institute’s Site Uptime Network and Seminar series. He is also the co-author of the Institute’s Tiers white paper.
